Waldorf Astoria "Red Velvet" Cake

This recipe that is used in my family is called Waldorf Astoria Cake – but this is more commonly called Red Velvet Cake. I made it while at home last weekend.

1/2 c. butter
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 container liquid red food coloring
2 Tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
2 1/4 c. sifted cake flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 Tbsp. vinegar

Cream butter, sugar and eggs. Make paste with food coloring and cocoa and add to above. Add salt and buttermilk alternately with the flour; add vanilla. Add baking soda and stir until completely mixed in. Then add vinegar and stir until mixed in. Bake in greased cake pans (makes 2 9″ rounds) in preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.

Frost with Cooked Waldorf Astoria Icing.
